Pioneer Pitch Day

Announcing the Finalists

UPDATE: Find out which ideas we selected to advance to Pitch Day out of the 500+ submissions we received, and follow us on Twitter for future updates.

Pioneer Pitch Day is an opportunity for innovators with ideas for transforming health and health care to pitch their ideas – live and in person – to an esteemed group of judges and RWJF program staff.

Pitch Day will take place on October 16 at AppNexus’ headquarters in New York's Flatiron District. Thomas Goetz, RWJF Entrepreneur-in-Residence and former executive editor of Wired, will host this invitation-only event in conjunction with the foundation’s Pioneer portfolio, which is focused on funding transformative innovations in health and health care.

How Does the Process Work?

First, we issued an open call for ideas on this website (submissions closed as of September 6th). We received over 500 submissions, and selected eight of these for continued consideration. Now, the teams behind these ideas will attend Pitch Day in NYC on October 16 to make the case for funding in front of an esteemed panel of judges. (Learn more about the judges.)

Following Pitch Day, one or more of these teams will be invited to have a meeting with Pioneer program staff and will potentially be invited to submit a full proposal for funding.

What Kinds of Ideas is Pioneer Looking For?

We’re not looking for incremental improvements. We’re not looking for apps. We’re looking for original solutions to entrenched problems that could dramatically improve Americans’ lives.

Read about our funding strategy and explore our existing programs and grants. You can also follow our blog, Pioneering Ideas, for information on the work we fund and our teams’ ideas about transforming health and health care.

Making middle schoolers into activists for healthy eating and activity

In 2008 I wrote a book for middle schoolers about healthy eating and activiity. Called My Best Friend Ever, its purpose was to create an interest among kids to take charge of their lives and health by becoming activists. Imagine a world where kids decide how to make themselves healthier and spread the word to their peers. Two unlikely 12 year olds, one overweight and one almost anorexic become best friends and set out ...more »

Agitated behavior is one of the most challenging symptoms for caregivers to manage. This non-invasive technology reduces episodes of anxiety, anger, aggression, and agitation, and turns them into more calm, positive behaviors. These behaviors puts stress on the patient. There's also an enormous hidden toll - the emotional and financial impact on family caregivers. Family caregivers spend over $8B in additional healthcare ...more »

Virtual case management services

Online, virtual case management services that patients and families can use. Patients with less severe conditions may not have access to a case manager who coordinates their care, insurance, and other services. Patients and families are forced to stumble around on their own to figure out these details, if they do so at all. This idea provides basic automated case management services for patients, such that they and their ...more »

Mobile STI Testing Units to Revolutionize Global Sexual Health

1 in 4 college students has an STI and 80% of them show no noticeable signs or symptoms. The CDC conservatively estimates that the lifetime cost of treating eight of the most common STIs contracted in just one year is $15.6 billion, whereas one condom costs about 4 cents wholesale, $1.50 in the drugstore. Investing in prevention is highly cost effective in economic and personal health costs, even though treatment currently ...more »

Story-based Site for Caregivers

Caregiving is incredibly stressful - telling your story and connecting with others can be therapeutic and informative. This is a site where caregivers come to share stories about their experiences. It's a place to learn about taking better care of a loved one, and a place to meet other caregivers. We've done a lot of work with caregivers and found that telling stories can be one of the most effective ways of conveying ...more »

Timeline based EMR that patients and physicians can both edit

Disease exists in a continuum. Doctor's visits are brief punctuations where a moment of the patient's disease condition is captured. To correctly classify and treat asthma it is important for the physician to know how many exacerbations occurred, how many puffs of albuterol have been used, etc. Currently we rely on a patient's recollection during the doctor's visit instead of marking down the event when it happens. ...more »

Health IT: The HUGE Hidden Cost Of Health Care

We believe that much of the true cost of healthcare lies hidden in inefficient access, delivery and payment systems that have escaped innovation and disruption until now. We contend that the lack of data pipelines enabling fluid, low cost transactions is a main impediment to reducing costs within the Health Industry. The industry standard for electronic transmission is called HIPPA ASC X12 5010. HIPAA (that’s ...more »
