Pioneer Pitch Day

Announcing the Finalists

UPDATE: Find out which ideas we selected to advance to Pitch Day out of the 500+ submissions we received, and follow us on Twitter for future updates.

Pioneer Pitch Day is an opportunity for innovators with ideas for transforming health and health care to pitch their ideas – live and in person – to an esteemed group of judges and RWJF program staff.

Pitch Day will take place on October 16 at AppNexus’ headquarters in New York's Flatiron District. Thomas Goetz, RWJF Entrepreneur-in-Residence and former executive editor of Wired, will host this invitation-only event in conjunction with the foundation’s Pioneer portfolio, which is focused on funding transformative innovations in health and health care.

How Does the Process Work?

First, we issued an open call for ideas on this website (submissions closed as of September 6th). We received over 500 submissions, and selected eight of these for continued consideration. Now, the teams behind these ideas will attend Pitch Day in NYC on October 16 to make the case for funding in front of an esteemed panel of judges. (Learn more about the judges.)

Following Pitch Day, one or more of these teams will be invited to have a meeting with Pioneer program staff and will potentially be invited to submit a full proposal for funding.

What Kinds of Ideas is Pioneer Looking For?

We’re not looking for incremental improvements. We’re not looking for apps. We’re looking for original solutions to entrenched problems that could dramatically improve Americans’ lives.

Read about our funding strategy and explore our existing programs and grants. You can also follow our blog, Pioneering Ideas, for information on the work we fund and our teams’ ideas about transforming health and health care.

True, universal health care is possible in the U.S.: "Medicare" for All

Take America’s Medicare program and extend it to everyone – from birth to death, everybody in, nobody out. Expand the benefits to serve all ages. Care continues to be delivered privately; it’s simply paid for by a progressive tax system. Encourage the formation of integrated delivery systems that focus on continuity of care at the individual level and population health in the aggregate. End Medicaid. End employer-based ...more »

EpiTrack: A solution for the construction of epidemiological scenarios in real time

The increased population flow from trade and tourism favors the displacement of individuals living in different realities, often exposed to endemic locations. MedTech Innovation to Highlight a Reduction in Healtcare Costs

MedTech is widely viewed as 1 of 7 main reasons for rise in healthcare costs. While the thought has some validity, it doesn't tell the entire narrative. As scrutiny increases about the negative impact on healthcare cost, I propose an idea to support a new form of innovation in MedTech. An idea for innovative sales models and approaches highlighting economic value more than product and procedure innovation highlighting ...more »

Healthy Food School Mandate

There should be a mandate for all public schools to teach nutrition and provide only healthy food in cafeterias and vending machines. Healthy food would mean fresh and/or organic without the use of growth hormones, food coloring, trans fat, high fructose corn syrup, mono-sodium glutamate (MSG), high sugar/salt/fat, as well as other unhealthy ingredients. We have an obesity epidemic in this country yet the options for ...more »

Integrative Approach to Primary Care

Since most of the health care dollar goes to the care of chronic disease, this is an approach to better coordinate and manage chronic conditions. Primary care clinics could be set up in rural or urban communities pairing a clinical pharmacist and an APN/PA. After diagnosis, chronic care management would be handled by those professionals, that have tele-health connections to a Family Practice Physician. The connection ...more »

Accountability

Health care is rarely practice in today's society. In today's society we provide sick care. My idea is people should have more accountability for their health care. Health promotion and disease prevention activities should be pushed on the insurance consumers. Insurance companies should reward or deduct costs for health promotion/disease prevention activities like groceries and exercise. People can get itemized receipts ...more »
