SmartAlert: Learning from physicians to deliver useful medication alerts

Electronic medical alerts are one the great advancements of healthcare IT. A medication alert is shown in electronic health records any time a physician orders a medication and there is a potential for a medication error. The problem today is that too many alerts are shown, leading to fatigue and distrust of alerts, with 49%-96% of alerts overridden today. The lesson is that more is not always better. Our vision ...more »

Building a healthcare Shangri-La

True innovation in healthcare is blocked by the lack of aggregated data. Aggregation of clinical, administrative, financial and behavioral/social data is hard to achieve because of the lack of communication between the silos and the lack of political will to tear down the silos. A big part of the problem is that data liquidity is hindered by interoperability issues as well as vendor control of electronic data. Our ...more »

Expansion of Readily Available Providers to Achieve Patient Engagement and Improve Health Outcomes

What is a diagnosis if the patient doesn’t understand it? What is a healthcare plan if the patient doesn’t follow it? What is an integrated network of providers if the patient doesn’t even know who they are? Healthcare engagement and education can be achieved with increased: patient to provider face-to-face time, access to providers and education time. With a provider readily available to make home visits, and consistent ...more »

Power to the People: Putting Data and Tools in the Hands of People to Improve Health and Healthcare

I’m not just a patient, I’m a person. I’m not just a passive recipient of care. My health’s about more than what the doctor or hospital does. I manage my health 99% of the time. So why do we look only to payers and providers to drive change? Why are doctors trying to engage me when I need to engage them? Let me drive change. The US has invested billions in EHRs and health information exchanges (HIEs) for providers. Let ...more »

Trade patients – Just like trading stocks in a new Patient Market!!

Every patient is recorded into a new patient trading platform. Patient health risks and insurance payment rewards are their corresponding "patient stock values". Like stock brokers, healthcare providers and others can trade a patients’ or a group of patients’ risks (well-being) among themselves to arrive at a market rate for buying their “patient stocks”. Stock owners get rewarded through their accurate analysis of patients ...more »

Drive competition and Reduce healthcare costs with – “Patient List” (Like Craigslist)

“Patient List” is a secure online market place where consumers with specific medical needs will “post” their needs along with a price range they can afford to pay. Providers will actively monitor this new market place to sign up patients and directly negotiate a price with the patient consumer. This radical new approach exposes the patient to an open market place at any point during the care delivery process thereby providing ...more »

Relationship-based care 2.0: The Maternity Neighborhood

What if the medical chart, instead of being just the clinician’s documentation record, was something the clinician and the patient owned and honed collaboratively? What if “personalized medicine” tapped the most underutilized resource for personalizing care: relationships? Private Practice is building on established success of our shared electronic health record for maternity care to launch the Maternity Neighborhood, ...more »

git phr - use git to merge and audit changes to medical records

I wish medical records could be merged across clinics, doctors and my personal devices into a cohesive, audited and verifiable record. If it were in git, my clinic and I could safely exchange commits recording changes made to my records.

Then, I could opt in to health information exchanges, sending only the data I've arranged with hosting providers like github.

Health ATM

I can be anywhere in the world and get money out of an ATM machine securely. I can’t get my health records automatically from my doctor’s office to my ER when I need them or in a format that the ER staff can read and understand. We need to negotiate with the ATM companies to develop a new Health ATM business line! The government is asking EVERY SINGLE community to develop its own health information exchange platform. ...more »
